Activities of the union of Ukrainians in Romania in the context of full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war
Abstract
In the conditions of a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, the issues of preserving it’s own national identity, finding ways to integrate Ukrainian society and resisting Russian military aggression and information warfare has become extremely sensitive for Ukraine. An important role in these processes is played by Ukrainians all over the world, whose unity is the key to the further consolidation of the Ukrainian nation, development of Ukrainian statehood and effective counteraction to anti-Ukrainian propaganda coming from the Russian Federation. A special role in these processes is played by the Ukrainian diaspora in Romania, in particular by the public organization Union of Ukrainians in Romania (SUR). The study is devoted to the analysis of the activities of the SUR in the context of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. Helping Ukraine and Ukrainian citizens who remained in Ukraine or decided to seek asylum in other countries became the priority task of the Union’s activity in modern conditions. In close cooperation with the Romanian state, together with all county branches and local organizations, SUR carries out its work in the following areas: consulting assistance, legal, psychological and translation support, housing search, humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian refugees in Romania, collection and transportation of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, assistance in further education for pupils and students from Ukraine, their integration into communities or school institutions, adaptation to the education system of Romania, cultural and sports events. In addition, the Union continues to fulfill its statutory obligations with the aim of protecting and preserving the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious identity of ethnic Ukrainians, reviving and forming national consciousness, protecting individual and collective rights of members of the organization and strengthening Romanian-Ukrainian cooperation.
