The Role of the Basic Knowledge for Adequate Administration and Transition of the Media Discussion

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the role of background knowledge for the perception and
translation of the m edia discourse. The scientific approaches representing definitions of the concept
«background knowledge» in translation studies are revealed. It has been pointed out that the
preparation of future philologists and translators needs to maximize the volume o f background
knowledge, explaining its impact on the quality of translation, and creating a scientifically sound
system of exercises that will facilitate the training of highly skilled professionals. The necessity of
comprehensive consideration of linguist ic and cultural factors in the process of preparing
interpreters for ensuring the quality of inter-lingual communication is explained. It has been
emphasized that the translator should be ready to perceive artistic works written in different
historical periods, and deeply understand various scientific, journalistic, newspaper and other media
texts including certain national-cultural traditions. He should be able to communicate within
different social groups of people, understand the dialectical versatility of concrete historical and
socio-cultural values of the country the language of which is being studied. The factors that influence
the adequate ways of transmitting media information are outlined. The concept of media discourse
from the standpoint of media linguistics is defined. The crucial features of media discourse have been
pointed out. It has been indicated that foreign words possessing national-cultural specificity are
extremely important for the media discourse, since they promote it into a higher level of inter-discursiveness. Examples of references to famous writers, politicians or public figures, the use of
Latin expressions, the translation of popular vocabulary, the use and translation of cliché phrases,
ways of expressing irony and humor approve of the necessity to work out the overwhelming typology
of different forms of background knowledge.
