Charitable activity of bessarabian nobles during military conflicts mid-XIX – early XX century: historiography of the issue
Abstract
The study of the history of the formation of charity in society is one of the current areas of the humanities. At the present stage, this phenomenon acquires special significance in the plane of Ukrainian realities. For our state, which is at war, the priority remains the issues of material and financial support of the army, assistance to wounded servicemen, support of the affected population.
The purpose of the article is to determine the number and analysis of scientific papers on the main areas of charitable activities of the Bessarabian nobles during the military conflicts of the mid-nineteenth – early twentieth century.
Most scholars of the mid-nineteenth – early twentieth century. in their works they focused on the simple recording of hostilities, the characteristics of the state of the army, the forms of charitable activity during the wars, the analysis of the activities of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The question of the contribution of the nobles of Bessarabia to the army was not a separate area of study and was considered in passing. In the dimension of Soviet ideology, consideration of this topic was not the subject of a special study, and only in a number of works there were some fragments of the analysis of aristocratic charity. Today, the phenomena and processes of the charitable movement, which were previously covered in passing, are rethought. In modern historiography there is a sufficient number of works on the charity of the nobility, but financial and material assistance from the representatives of the South Ukrainian nobility during the military conflicts of this period have not been comprehensively studied.
